Tarja - "The Seer (featuring Doro Pesch)"
Mormons, can anyone answer my questions?
I tried talking to someone on the lds.org website about Mormonism, to ask about some of the questions I have about the Mormon faith. The Missionary that I was chatting with answered my questions kind of in a boring manner. Here's how the conversation went ...
noah: How did Joseph Smith translate the Book of Mormon?
James: Through the power of God
noah: But, physically, how did he do it?
James: I don't know, I wasn't alive back then
noah: Doesn't it say that he used seer stones and looked into his hat
or something like that?
James: I dunno, ive never really looked into it.
I would like a real Mormon to answer my questions about Mormonism. Please send me a message if you are interested in talking. Thanks Mormons!
Well, you have a fair question. The fact is that Joseph Smith did have his own seer stone that he found and used by putting it into a top hat which he put his face into. It seems Joseph had some kind of keen spiritual gift for perceiving things spiritually, and he was actually employed in searching for buried treasure from time to time (because he had some renown for it). However, he stopped using his spiritual sensitivity for such things as he became aware of a higher calling from God to translate the ancient record that we know as the Book of Mormon.
Such (what we consider very strange) practices were far more common among the folk of the early 1800's. People weren't nearly so scientifically minded and thus it wasn't uncommon to find people delving into more supernatural things. Besides that, Joseph was later given the Urim and Thummim from God (these are mentioned several times in the Old Testiment) to do translation and receive revelation. In the end Joseph didn't use any aids to help with the translation as he was "in tune" enough himself.
There is a history of God using different means to aid the faith of those asking for a miracle of some sort. Jesus Christ did the same types of healing in several different manners, like doing something rather gross like making mud from His saliva and putting it on some blind man's eyes. Clearly this wasn't necessary considering He could simply tell the dead to arise, or give the word and some person miles away would be made whole. It seems that the Lord's actions were all based upon helping the individual in need to believe and have faith sufficient. Surely, God doesn't require a Urim and Thummim, or a seer stone, or any other physical tool or action to perform a miracle...usually it's just us who need help to see that God is doing it.
Lyman Bushman has a wonderful, level handed book that looks plainly at all these issues surrounding Joseph Smith and his life. It's called "Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling."
The fact that this isn't widely known among members today is not surprising. Parents who do know about it, who are confident in their faith, and truly feel that they have received a witness from God of the truthfulness of the teaching of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, don't want to quash their children's growing faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, and His prophets by giving disclosures of all the "controversies" that in the end aren't hidden or suppressed by the church.
At any rate, it's one of those things that you can find out if you want to, but the church clearly doesn't put out all these disclaimers of things that are often easily construed (and have been since the church's founding) but in the end don't have much bearing on the fact that each and every member of the church (who is faithful) is such because they go seeking a witness from God, and in one way or another know that despite his weaknesses and less desirable traits, that God chose a simple, mortal, man to be a prophet. Much as God reaches out to each and every one of us truly pathetic creatures who often disobey, yet whom He still loves.
In fact, all this information, about Joseph and his seer stone and hat, and the Urim and Thummim can be readily found in books in the church owned book store.
