Most TXVs come factory set on residential units. If you need to adjust a TXV you have to determine superheat and subcooling. Usually 1/4 of a turn will change superheat by 1 degree. If you do not have gauges and surface temp probes you really should not adjust a TXV as you could mess up your compressor. Usually if you are looking at something like a 4 ton TXV on a 3 ton unit the TXV can still regulate the freon flow. However if you have a 3 ton TXV for a 4 ton unit it will not be able to flow enough freon causing a restriction and preventing proper operation.
