What's the best cooling temperature to set home air conditioner to?
Not as easy an answer as it may seem. A lot depends on when you want/need the cooling effect. During the day, the house temperature rises and it may make more sense to actually keep the house cool even tho you may not be home. It will take more energy to try and cool a house to, say, 72 degrees after it has set in the sun all day than to keep it all day at a consistent 72-74 degrees. Trying to run an AC unit to hard can also result in the unit freezing up. Humidity also plays an important part answering your question. Just an opinion here...if your house and system are in good condition, insulation, etc. all in good order, I would set your thermostat around 74-76 when you aren't home and then drop it to around 72 when youre there. Try to keep humidity in the 30-40% bracket. Frankly, the whole thing is a bit arbitrary...it's what ever makes you comfortable both temperature and budget wise.
