How does someone know if the compressor has gone out in their Central Air Conditioner?
Does it happen suddenly? Without warning? How long do compressors usually last in a Central Air Conditioner?
Compressors can slowly wear out over time and eventually you will notice that on a 90 degree day the house just is not as cool as it used to be, or they can quit suddenly from a mechanical failure. Fortunately there are a number of other things that can happen that will cause a system to either quit or perform poorly so a system that is not cooling is not always a disaster.
Now for the $200.00 question. Normally a compressor will last for 10 years or more, and I have seen several over 30 years old and still working....inefficiently, but working. Almost all systems have at least a five year compressor warranty with many having 10 year warranties and a few having even more. Based strictly on warranties it is safe to assume that manufacturers expect at least five years life, while I will go so far as to say, again, normally one will see at least 10 years life.
