when i switch off my epson c42 printer the cartridge carrier does not return to centre position.?
To change a cartridge i need to be able to get at it, however when i switch off the printer the "cartridge carrier" moves to the far end of "Rail" under the cover.
If i leave the printer on it still stops at the end, not used printer for 4 years hence cartridge needs changing.
Done windows test and printout says correctly installed.

You shouldn't need to switch it off to change the cartridge. It's in the correct place switched on too (it doesn't know you're trying to change the cartridge).
In Printing Preferences go to the Maintenance tab and tell it you wish to change the ink cartridge from there. It will move into the correct place and give you instructions!
A word of warning though - Epson inkjets are well known for drying up if you don't use them much. If this has been out of action for 4 years, I wouldn't hold much hope for a good print out! Once you've changed the cartridge, try cleaning the print heads (probably multiple times) to see what the best printout you can get is. Good luck!
