How do you get the smell of mothballs out of canvas sneakers?

I recently bought a new pair of sneakers, but the storeroom must have had mothballs in it, because they reek. I've tried airing them out (for about a week!) and they've been through the wash twice. Can someone please tell me how to get rid of this awful smell?

Stick two pieces of charcoal into a pair of old socks and put one sock with the charcoal into each shoe. Do this every night after taking them off and change out the charcoal every couple weeks. The charcoal traps moisture and odors inside them and out of your shoes. Allow them to sit open without their laces in the sunshine for a day too for extra assurance. Good night, don't poor ammonia in your shoes, they will forever smell like cat pee and animals will pee on them every chance they get cause that is the main ingredient in urine that tells them where to go.
